I had a 1 on 1 conversation over dinner for almost an hour with my 7,5 year old daughter last night and couldn’t believe how she could become so mature & wiser over her real age. Here are just some that I vividly remember. I wish I recorded it all.
“Do you like the vacation?”
“Yes! Veeery much”
“Which part do you like the most?”
“Everything! Especially the science and riding a pony horse”
“And which part you don’t like the most?”
“Nothing! I like all of it”
“But I want to apologize that I snap on you last night”
“That’s okay, I forgive you” *smile widely*
“Sometimes I feel so bad because it’s hard for me to control my emotion when I mad at you” *frowning*
“Every child in the family has daddy, right? When you feel bad, just remember how you love daddy before you have us, and then love us like that. Remember self control, breath like this *taking deep breath and release it softly* like calming moment. When you are angry, stand in front of a mirror, and you will know you don’t like to see yourself like that. So you stop (being) angry. Remember about loyalty, loyalty means we sacrifice for others. Also remember about hope. Do you remember the story about The Little Match Girl and her grandma? *telling the whole story* And another thing is about respect, it means to treat others right. Any question?”
“Uhmm. Yes. When I ask you to do things like study, sleep, or stop playing games, but you don’t listen to me or refuse to do it, what should I do?”
“Well, just teach us how. Say nicely and show us how to, so we will understand.”
“You know what, I didn’t have the chance to have conversation like this with my mom when I was at your age.”
“Why?” *eyes wide open*
“We only talk like parents to child, not like bestfriends. Sometimes I wish we could be bestfriends like us.”
“Have you hugged her?” *saying this seriously*
“Yes of course. Even in some occasions like when we were out of town together, I tried to get closer, she still seemed to keep the distance. And we almost never talk about deep feelings.”
“Because you’re afraid she will not like it?”
“Because she’s a closed person, I mean like she limits herself from being open up.”
“Maybe she just doesn’t know how.”
“Maybe.”
“To be honest, it affects my relationship with others too. It’s a bit hard for me to get closer with girls. Much easier for me to befriends with boys, just like I am closer to my dad. That’s why I have more boys bff than girls bff. Do you know how to make friends with girls?”
“Do what girls like to do! For example, I Iike My Little Pony. Kathleen likes My Little Pony. We share about that, and we become good friends.”
“Good idea”
“You can also share foods to poor people because poor people usually don’t have many friends, I share foods with them and I cried” *literally, her eyes are getting red and her hands are busy wiping it*
“That’s a good thing to do.”
“I am so glad that we can be bestfriends.”
“Yes, me too.” *hugging me tight*
